SECTION 1. Downloads and Requirements

As a Best Practice, we recommend backing up the ShadowProtect Images to a Network Device (Windows OS) or External Media Device such as an External Hard-drive or NAS.

There may be cases where bandwidth restrictions prevent the upload of Images to the Cloud. In these cases whereby you are only storing Images locally, you can omit the last two downloads above and simply download and install ShadowProtect 5.2.7

Installation on _source_ and _destination_ devices.

Step 1 - Download and install ShadowProtect v5.2.3 on the _source_ Machine, that is, the machine whos Volume(s) you wish to backup. (Reboot is required. See Step 2 before rebooting.)

Step 2. Download and Install Image Manager on the _destination_ device

*** IF you are using an External HD or NAS , you will use the same Device (OS) as the **Source** and **Destination**, install all 3 applications listed above and reboot the machine.

Step 3. Download and install OBRM on the _destination_ device

SECTION 2. Assigning and activating a ShadowProtect license

> Log in to the Reseller or Infrascale [Dashboard]({:target=\_blank} that houses both the ShadowProtect license and the Backup Account you wish to assign it to.

> Then Navigate to: Manage > Licenses > Assign Licenses

> Assign the License to a Backup Account

  • Input the Account Username

  • Select the License In this case ShadowProtect v5

  • Input Device name

  • Click Add button to generate License Key

> This will then generate a 16- digit Serial Number in the table below Example:

> Copy/Paste this Serial Number into the ShadowProtect Application

Help > Product Activation > Input Serial Number and fill out subsequent fields > Activate

*** Note *** by default a new installation of ShadowProtect comes with a 15-day free trial.

*** Note *** DR Images created under a Trial Version will not be eligible for BareMetal Restore


> Open the ShadowProtect EXE and click the Wizards tab on the Menu Bar > Select Backup.

> Click NEXT until you reach the Volume Selection window:

> Select desired OS and/or Data Volume(s) for backup then click **NEXT**.

**Note:** Each volume will be a separate Image file (for ex, a Full image of the C:\ will display as: C_VOL-b001.spf)

**Note:** Select the System Reserved Partition if you have any drive encryption (BitLocker, TrueCrypt ,etc)

> Now select the _destination_ - the device and folder where the images are being backed up to:

> Choose Network Locations if you are backing up to another machine or NAS on the Network. This will require you to input the NAS or Domain Admin credentials.

> Choose Browse, if it is an external drive.

> Once Destination has been set, click Next to choose Backup type and Set the Schedule

***We recommend using Continuous Incrementals due to the fact there is only one FULL Backup for the entire life of the Image-chain, thereafter taking only incremental backups. This makes uploading to the Cloud much more efficient and is especially easier for those with limited bandwidth.

*** Please see the end of this section for steps on setting up a local-only Image backup.

> If you only require one backup per day, configure the top portion **VSS Incremental Backups** by selecting the days you wish the back up to run as well as the start time.

> If you require more than one backup per day (can get as low as 15 minutes per backup , configure the bottom section **Additional Incremental Backups**, check the days of the week you want the backup to run (Sat excluded by default)

> Set the time to start taking backups and the time to stop taking backups.

> You can also dictate the number of backups you want to run per day by manipulating the **Minutes between backups** number. In the screenshot above, the backup is set to run 3 times a day.

> Once Schedule is finalized, click Next into Options.

> Here you have the option to Compress and encrypt your Image files and Split the Image files.

> We recommend splitting the Image File into 2GB or 4GB increments since this makes it easier for the online backup client to send data blocks to the cloud. Also, in the event of any local network lapses, the backup job will more easily recover.

> There is also the option to Name your backup Job - this will be present in the file name.

Note: StorageCraft recommends keeping the default advanced option settings unless you fully understand the impact of changing these settings.

Click Next to finalize the backup; you can then choose to run now or wait until the scheduled start time.


If you choose to keep the ShadowProtect Images locally - without sending them to the cloud, you can choose to create a Full Image every Week or Month.

Image Manager is NOT needed - the option for Weekly or Monthly retention is found in Advanced options (below)</b>


Image Manager is a tool you will use to manage and truncate the _continuous incremental_ backup images that will be taking place.

Its functions are to consolidate and compress daily images into weekly images and weekly images into Monthly, so as to minimize the length of the backup chain and the chance of corruptions and to delete images that are no longer needed. For example, if you only wanted to keep the last 6 months of backups, you would choose to keep the last 6 months of _consolidated monthly_ backups.

This will determine the RPO (Restore Point Objective) of your backups.

> Open Image Manager and create a password

> Click the Folder-plus icon below OR right-click **Start Managing**

> Select the ShadowProtect Image Destination folder to manage:

> Retention Settings

  • Check the first box to enable retention settings.

  • Choose how long to keep intra-daily, consolidated daily, weekly, and monthly images for. These will determine how granular you can go back in time.

***For example, if an Institution requires backups every 30 minutes in a 10 hour window, you will have 20 intra-daily incremental files created daily. This can consume destination space quickly, but it will allow you to restore to many time-points (as opposed to one daily file) - the same applies for consolidated daily and weekly files.

  • Now, choose either to keep a certain amount of Consolidated Monthly Images, or keep them all indefinitely. Set the time period in which you would like to keep - the higher this number, the more local and cloud space will be required.

  • By default, **Move all consolidated images files to a subdirectory instead of deleting them** is enabled. Please disable this if you wish to delete the older monthly images.

  • Save and Image Manager is now set!

> Turn Caching Options off: Menu > Advanced Options > Caching Options > Retransfer Entire File > Save

> Click **Configure** next to the File andamp; Folder backup option:

> Select the Option **Do not scan (select files manually)**, then click Next

> Locate and Select your **Destination** Folder for backup, and then click Next

> Set a Schedule and Retention period

  • Check the second box to enable automatic backups, then select the time period you wish the backups to run ( We recommend setting this to run after hours and post-shadow protect backups).

  • Select **Backup even when Windows User is not logged on**. If the local Windows user requires a password to enter windows.

  • Enable and set the retention policy. As the Local Images will be self-truncating with the help of Image Manager, we also want those space-saving changes made to the cloud as well. In order for this to occur, set the retention policy to a date of your choice. This will delete files [Images] from the cloud if they are deleted from the local computer, after waiting `X` days.

  • Input Email address to receive backup reports and Finish.

SECTION 6 - Recovery Options

There are 4 ways to recover a ShadowProtect Image with varying levels of power.

  • Restor Folder/files using Mount / Quick Mount - this will allow you to mount an image as a drive letter to recover files/folders.

  • Restore Data Volume - Use the Restore Wizard in ShadowProtect to recover a data (non-boot) volume. Note: This method does not require you to reboot the system.

  • Restore OS Volume to Similar or Dissimilar hardware.

    • Create ShadowProtect Recovery Environment BOOT ISO and burn to disc.

  • Load ISO / Recovery Environment on new Device andamp; Connect Media which contains Image Files

  • Select Recovery Environment Appropriate for the OS - uses one of 2 pre-baked OSs to boot from.

  • Recovery Wizard - locate Disk Map and right-click the Volume you wish to rebuild - locate Image Files to recover from, finalize Recovery, and then Reboot.



Restore to VM

  • By leveraging the open source Oracle VirtualBox software, VIrtualBoot provides a quick, temporary replacement system for a failed server. Locate Image File > Right Click > VirtualBoot.

  • Or you could convert an existing Image to import to your own Hypervisor using the Image Conversion Tool
